Three to See Edmonton Events: UFest at Borden, Amanda Dunsmore's Irish art and 35-mm Twister

UFest: Spanning two days in Borden Park, Edmonton’s Ukrainian Fest is the largest of its kind in Western Canada, which will surprise no one around here. Three outdoor stages will run colourful-costumed programming from local to global, circled by food vendors, a marketplace and of course beer and other drinks. The more than 1,200 performers on deck include UFest After Dark’s Euphoria Zabava Band, Millennia and Zabava Band Trembita, starting at 8 p.m. each night. This year the fest teamed up with the French Canadian community, so Le Fuzz Trio, Daniel Gervais Trio, and La Troupe Zéphyr will also entertain. So come on down — more info at ufest.ca.

AGREEMENT: Two decades years in the making, Irish artist Amanda Dunsmore https://mitchellartgallery.macewan.ca/amandadunsmore has been producing video portraits of community and political leaders behind the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which mostly brought an end to the violence of The Troubles. Faces range from Nobel Laureates John Hume and David Trimble to Monica McWilliams and Pearl Sagar, delegates of Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition, all sitting in silence. The portrait on view will change each week, so it’s an evolving exhibition. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 19 there will be a reception and artist talk.

Twister (1996): A 35-mm print spectacular! During the approach of the most powerful storm in decades, professor Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) and an underfunded team of students prepare the prototype for Dorothy, a ground-breaking tornado data-gathering device conceived by her estranged husband, Bill (Bill Paxton). Tension! You can already hear Shania Twain’s No One Needs to Know playing. Plus, there’s a pre-show beer tasting, show up at 9 p.m. for that.
