Verbal Tapas
Stage 5, Acacia Hall, 10433 83 Ave.
4 out of 5 stars
As we entered the venue, solo performer Rob Gee met everyone at the door, handing out the menus for his verbal tapas. The show is structured so that audience members “order” poems for him to perform from the menu. Each selection has a title and a one-sentence synopsis of the topic to aid your ordering decisions.

After participating in more than a dozen Fringe festivals in Edmonton, Gee is a familiar and beloved presence. (Don’t miss the second run of his other show, A.W.O.L., which was a fan favourite last year.) He’s the kind of person whose presence is just enjoyable — I could watch him literally read from a menu and still have fun.
For those who often cringe at spoken word poetry, myself included, fret not. Gee’s poems are very much stories with just a little bit of rhythm and rhyming. Like Gee himself, they have zero pretension. They draw on his experiences of love, life and work as a psychiatric nurse. You’ll laugh, you’ll relate, you’ll have fun.
